Lady’s First: Princess Diana has moved ahead of her husband, Prince Charles, to become the most popular member of the British royal family, according to two polls released Monday, Di’s 30th birthday. The princess is described in one poll as fashionable, caring and charming, but few thought she was intellectual.

Easy Mark: The voting was close, but comedian Roseanne Barr Arnold beat out Dan Quayle and Iraq President Saddam Hussein for the title of sitting duck. That’s according to the National Society of Newspaper Columnists, whose members voted in Huntington, W. Va., over the weekend on the person they considered their easiest targets for criticism. Runners-up for the dubious distinction were baseball slugger Jose Canseco and Sen. Jesse Helms (R-N.C.).

Save: New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner stole the hearts of a group of kids stranded on the highway in Tampa, Fla., over the weekend. The 43 children were bound for an amusement park when their bus broke down. Along came Steinbrenner, on his way to a golf game. Steinbrenner bought them all lunch at a fast-food restaurant and then got on the phone. Before long, three vans showed up from a Tampa hotel he owns.

‘Bear-ly’ a Resemblance: A platoon of pretenders battled Saturday to win a Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf look-alike contest in Lake George, N.Y. When the sand settled, Army veteran Joe McCarthy, who served under Schwarzkopf in the Vietnam War, had beat out 10 other contenders. McCarthy will lead a local Fourth of July ticker-tape parade honoring Gulf War veterans, and he gets a free trip to Bagdad, Ariz.
