USX Discrimination Dispute Settled: U.S. District Judge Clarence C. Newcomer ended a 15-year-old discrimination battle between USX Corp. and about 2,000 black job applicants by approving a $36.3-million settlement. Newcomer formally closed the case that twice went before the U.S. Supreme Court. The class-action suit filed in 1976 contends that because of their race, black applicants were denied jobs at the company’s Fairless Works plant near Philadelphia during the 1970s. Newcomer in 1983 ruled for the plaintiffs, based on the proportion of black applicants to blacks hired.
