WELDON CANYON : Speedy Decision on Dump Is Urged

Share

The Oxnard City Council passed a resolution Tuesday urging the County Board of Supervisors to expedite a decision on whether Weldon Canyon near Ojai should be the site of the county’s new landfill.

The county is in the process of completing an environmental review of Weldon Canyon, but opponents of the site have asked the county board to extend the review and allow for more public comment.

With its vote Tuesday, Oxnard joined Simi Valley, Santa Paula and Fillmore and the Channel Islands Beach Community Services District in urging the county board to expedite the process.

The Bailard Landfill near Oxnard, which serves western Ventura County, is scheduled to be closed in late 1992. City officials in Oxnard and elsewhere fear that unless the county picks a landfill site soon, the county’s trash will have to be hauled long distances at a high economic and environmental cost.
