Council Can’t Agree on Filling Vacancy

The City Council seat left open when Ed Glasgow abruptly resigned last month remains vacant.

The council could not agree on a replacement Monday night and will try again at its next meeting July 15. If members still can’t agree then, the seat will be filled by a special election in November.

The list of eight people nominated by the council was whittled to four Monday. All are either former council candidates or involved in city committees.

Karen McGlinn, who lost to Councilman Jay Humphrey last November by 147 votes, was favored by Councilman Peter F. Buffa and Mayor Mary Hornbuckle.

Humphrey, who campaigned with McGlinn last November, voted against her when a straw vote was taken on the final four candidates. He said that his preferred candidates, Irvine code enforcement officer Mark Korando and traffic commissioner Dave Stiller, were not on November’s ballot.

Candidate Joe Erickson, who was also backed by Buffa and Hornbuckle, has served on the Planning Commission for six years, including one year as its chairman. Erickson was unsuccessful in a 1988 council bid.

Korando is a member of the city Redevelopment Advisory and General Plan panels. Stiller is on the Transportation Committee.
