Women’s Role in Society

Share

Congress has previously decided that women may pursue careers as regular military officers through attendance at government military academies. The selection, training and commissioning of regular military officers should follow a common standard. The idea that the Virginia Military Institute may march to a “different drummer” is fundamentally out of step with the country’s military policy (editorial, June 24).

Congress should move to preclude the awarding of regular military commissions to graduates of institutions that follow admission and training practices significantly different from those of the government military academies. Tradition is important to the military; preparing for the future is even more important.
