Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Inquiry Sought on Release of Hostages

Congress should conduct an inquiry into allegations that the 1980 Ronald Reagan presidential campaign tried to delay the release of American hostages in Iran, a senior Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee said. Rep. Lee H. Hamilton (D-Ind.) on CBS-TV’s “Face the Nation” called the allegations “exceedingly serious.” But former Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III said on the same program that “there’s a real question whether Congress has the constitutional authority” to investigate.
