Nation IN BRIEF : PENNSYLVANIA : Senators Sue to Bar Closing of Shipyard
The U.S. senators from Pennsylvania and New Jersey filed a lawsuit seeking to keep the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard open. Their suit, in the U.S. District Court in Philadelphia, says the Navy and the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission violated federal laws and regulations in its deliberations. The suit names as defendants the defense and navy secretaries and the base closure panel, which voted June 30 to shut the shipyard and seven other Navy installations, nine Army bases, 13 Air Force bases and a Marine base.
