Critic Michele Wallace faults Spike for having the Wesley Snipes and Annabelle Sciorra characters come from different economic circumstances. While it may be true that interracial couples of similar economic levels are finding love, as Wallace says, Spike’s scenario is also true. The larger picture, however, is that he emerges as the pre-eminent consciousness-raiser of our time.

For the record, Yusuf Hawkins was shot to death, not beaten.
