“The park has undergone a lot of changes since the late ‘40s when the city acquired it,” said director Rich Kinoshita, who has worked at the park for 10 years. “Lately, the changes have been for the better.”

For many years, Stonehurst Recreation Center was plagued with loitering teen-agers and graffiti vandals. However, for the past two years the city has stepped up efforts to keep the park neatly maintained and to make it a safer, more enjoyable place for people seeking relaxation and recreation. The most popular leisure activity at Stonehurst is horseshoes, which are played in the park’s two well-kept pits, Kinoshita said.

Sign-ups are ongoing for the year-round adult basketball leagues involving 125 teams and will take place later this summer for a fall flag-football league.
