From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Some Banks Expect to Disappear: One in every six commercial banks responding to a survey says it expects to be bought out after Congress passes legislation removing barriers to interstate banking. If that proves accurate, the number of commercial banks could shrink through mergers and failures from 12,250 now to fewer than 10,000, the fewest since the 1890s. According to the June survey by Grant Thornton, accounting and management consulting firm, 17% of the 632 responding banks did not expect to survive as independent institutions through 1996.
