U.N. Convoy Brings Medicine to Cambodia
A U.N. convoy carrying seven tons of medicine has arrived in Phnom Penh, the first to come overland from Thailand in more than 15 years.
A report from Cambodia’s official SPK news agency Friday said the malaria, tuberculosis and leprosy medicines arrived in the capital Thursday. An estimated 500,000 Cambodians suffer from malaria and 50,000 from tuberculosis.
Officials said it was the first U.N. convoy to Phnom Penh from Thailand since the Khmer Rouge began its brutal four-year rule in Cambodia in 1975.
Overland delivery was made possible by a cease-fire declared last month by the Cambodian government and the three guerrilla factions fighting it.
