Four law students said Friday they created huge circles which appeared overnight in north German cornfields, shattering the mystery for people who believed the symbols were signs from outer space.

North German television said the four admitted making the circles in 10 fields, similar to mysterious circles that have appeared in England.

“We only wanted to show that what the English can do we can do here,” the television report quoted one of the unidentified students as saying.

It showed film of the four using wooden planks to flatten the corn into circles and other shapes.

Before the disclosure, Swiss author Erich von Daniken, who specializes in writing about paranormal phenomena, told a German radio station he believed the circles and other symbols were attempts by aliens to contact Earth.

“The circles in the cornfields are cosmic intelligence tests,” he said. But he discounted theories they were UFO landing sites.
