Police believe a stowaway thief hidden in a trunk stole nearly $1 million in cash from the baggage compartment of a recent Air France flight from Corsica to Paris.

Investigators said Thursday they were on the trail of a man who checked an oversized trunk on the July 17 flight from Bastia, where a special security force had loaded 5.7 million francs onto the plane in sealed, lead-weighted pouches.

When opened in Paris the following morning, the pouches were filled with old cardboard boxes and newspaper. Debris scattered in the plane’s baggage compartment indicated that the sacks had been opened during the flight.
