Burkholder Wins Platform Event at the U.S. Diving Junior Olympics

Joy Burkholder of Mission Viejo won the platform event Sunday in the girls’ 16-18 division of the Speedo/U.S. Diving Junior Olympic Championships in Clayton, Mo.

Burkholder, 16, who dives for the Mission Viejo Nadadores, had a total score of 357.10 to defeat Rachel Tuominen of Beaverton, Ore., who finished at 328.40.

Another of the Nadadores, Tyce Routsen of El Toro, finished second in the three-meter event in the boys’ 14-15 division. Routsen, 15, totaled 397.75 points to 465.50 for the winner, Bryan Gillooly of Kissimmee, Fla. Jeff Nichols of Laguna Hills finished 11th at 309.95.

The Nadadores dominated the team competition, finishing in first place with 170 points. The runner-up Cincinnati Stingrays had 127.
