From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A reputed leader of the Cali cocaine cartel was convicted of conspiring to smuggle into the United States up to $25 million worth of drugs a week. Henry Orjuela, 46, one of four brothers said to head the cartel, faces life in prison and $1 million in fines after trial before Judge I. Leo Glasser in Brooklyn federal court. Brooklyn U.S. Atty. Andrew Maloney called the brothers “key suppliers of cocaine in the New York area,” and police estimated their share of the New York traffic at 80%. Maloney said Orjuela, who pleaded innocent, was the highest-ranking cartel leader brought to trial so far. Jaime Orjuela, still at large, is believed hiding in Colombia. Gilberto and Carlos Orjuela were among eight defendants who pleaded guilty in the conspiracy case.
