With prices rising higher and higher in the Soviet Union, millions of subway riders in the capital received an unusual surprise Wednesday: a day of free rides on the Metro.

The free rides were sponsored by MMM, a Soviet firm that sells computers and other electronic devices.

Subway fares were recently tripled to 15 kopecks (24 cents at the official exchange rate).
