Ellis Remains Women’s Leader of Race Across American Event

Cathy Ellis of Cambridge, Mass., remains the leader of the women’s division of Race Across America.

Ellis passed through Uniontown, Ala., at 5:53 p.m. (PDT) Tuesday, 2,443 miles into the 2,930-mile cross-country bicycle race that began July 27 in Irvine.

Ellis, who is averaging 9.8 m.p.h. and 243 miles a day, is expected to reach the finish line in Savannah, Ga., at about 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Debbie Ann Breaud of Burlington, Tex., is about 22 hours behind Ellis.

Bob Forney of Denver won the men’s division for the second consecutive year when he crossed the finish line at 2:33 a.m. Monday. It took him 8 days 16 hours 44 minutes to complete the ride.

In the mixed tandem competition, Cherie and David Moore of Orange reached Montgomery, Ala., at 7:02 p.m. Tuesday, 2,533 miles into the race. They are expected to reach Savannah at about 11 a.m. Thursday.
