Anti-Gay Policy Backed

Re “The Nasty Business of ‘Outing’ ” (Aug. 7): Randy Shilts’ Commentary on homosexuality says “few intelligent residents of the late 20th Century truly believe” the military’s anti-gay policies are merited.

I was in the Army in the early ‘70s. I lived in a barracks with 50 guys. I trained in close quarters with fellow soldiers in basic training.

During this personally challenging time, it would have been an unsettling, unwelcome and disturbing distraction to be wondering whether the guy in the next bunk, next shower or next tent was interested in me sexually.

Even worse would have been wondering whether my drill sergeant, first sergeant or commanding officer was physically attracted to me.

I am one resident of the 20th Century who wholeheartedly supports the military’s anti-gay policies.
