SWIMMING NATIONAL MEET : Gjertsen Doubles, Adding 200 to 100

Doug Gjertsen, a member of the 1988 Olympic team, won his second event at the Phillips 66 National Swimming Championships, taking the 200-meter freestyle Wednesday.

Gjertsen, who won the 100-meter freestyle Tuesday, took the longer race in 1 minute 49.64 seconds. Scott Jaffe was second, .06 behind.

Dara Torres, also on the 1988 Olympic team, won the women’s 200-meter freestyle in 2:01.68.

Torres, who hasn’t been in a major meet since the Seoul Games, posted the second fastest time ever by an American in the 100 meter freestyle at 55.24. The time came as Torres swam led off for the Florida Aquatic 400-meter freestyle relay team.

In only events, night Derek Weatherford won the men’s 400-meter individual medley in 4:22.39, and Sheila Taormina took the women’s 400 IM in 4:55.87.

The meet features swimmers who did not go the Pan Am Games or the Pan-Pacific Games, which begin later this month.
