From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A man who received the wrong heart in a transplant operation in Portland, Ore., is in critical but stable condition and now tops a national list to receive a new heart of the right blood type before his body rejects the first transplant, hospital officials said. Physicians caring for the man are using high-tech treatments in a struggle to stave off rejection of the new organ. Surgeons at Oregon Health Sciences University inadvertently transplanted the heart of a donor with type A blood into a type O man and only later discovered the mismatch in laboratory testing.
