From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Iraq said that more than 14,000 children under 5 years old have died from lack of drugs since the U.N. trade embargo was imposed last year as punishment for Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait. “The reason for these deaths is lack of medicine and medical equipment,” the Iraqi News Agency quoted a Health Ministry official as saying. The embargo excludes food and medicine, but Iraq says it does not have adequate funds and that shipments are held up by red tape.
