COUNTYWIDE : Panel to Review Sunset Marina Lease

The long-term control and use of Sunset Marina at Huntington Harbour will be reviewed tonight by the Orange County Harbors, Beaches and Parks Commission.

The commission is scheduled to discuss a proposal to renew for 30 more years the county’s lease with a private operator of the marina.

In addition to reviewing the terms of the proposed lease renewal, the commission is being provided a copy of an outside consultant’s analysis of marina operations, according to John W. Sibley, chief deputy director of the county Environmental Management Agency.

“It’s a review-and-comment item,” Sibley said, referring to tonight’s meeting.

The newly proposed lease became controversial in June, after The Times reported that the son of Supervisor Harriett M. Wieder had been involved in the negotiations. Lee Wieder lobbied county officials on behalf of the marina operator, Goldrich & Kest Inc., from 1989 until mid-1990.

For her part, Supervisor Wieder has said her actions affecting Sunset Marina have been intended only to get the county the best terms possible, while ensuring fair treatment for Goldrich & Kest. The marina is within Wieder’s 2nd Supervisorial District.

Some groups, representing boat owners and recreational vehicle enthusiasts, have subsequently opposed the proposed lease renewal, contending that any new agreement should be opened to competitive bid. Goldrich & Kest’s existing lease with the county is not to expire until 1999.
