A newborn girl found abandoned in a Firestone district alley Tuesday morning was in guarded but stable condition at a county medical center, and the woman suspected of being her mother was arrested, authorities said.

Nearby residents found the infant about 9:20 a.m. in an alley near 92nd Street and Parmelee Avenue, in the unincorporated Firestone district of South Los Angeles, Seriff’s Sgt. Noel Lanier said. Deputies took the baby to Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center, where she was suffering from exposure, he said. Doctors indicated the full-term baby was about eight hours old when she was found, he said.

Shortly before noon, Gloria Pierce, 34, of Compton, was arrested in the neighborhood where the baby was found, Martin said. He said Pierce probably will be booked for felony child endangerment and possibly for attempted murder.
