Colorado Governor Takes Bite Out of Cantaloupe Scare: Gov. Roy Romer nibbled a cantaloupe in a T-shirt emblazoned with a slice of the melon to help calm a salmonella scare that has devastated the market. Cantaloupe growers in California, Colorado, Texas and elsewhere have watched sales plummet since the national Centers for Disease Control said Aug. 15 that more than 400 people in 23 states and Canada became ill this summer, apparently from eating cantaloupes.
