World IN BRIEF : UNITED NATIONS : Salvadoran Rivals Invited for Talks
U.N. Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar has invited Salvadoran President Alfredo Cristiani and five guerrilla commanders to New York for talks Sept. 16 and 17 to discuss the country’s civil war. U.N. sources said the two sides would not be engaged in direct talks but would meet separately with Perez de Cuellar in an effort to break the impasse in negotiations aimed at ending the country’s 11-year-old civil war. The secretary general last week said he would intervene only at a critical juncture.
