THOUSAND OAKS : Council to Consider 3 Cultural Grants

Share

The Thousand Oaks City Council on Tuesday will consider doling out $26,500 in grants requested by the local symphony, a committee planning cultural exchanges with a community in Armenia and a theater group.

The largest request came from the Conejo Symphony, which has asked for $20,000 to keep its orchestra going during the 1991-1992 season. Two years ago, the city agreed to increase its financial support from $17,500 a year.

In a letter to the council, former symphony President Ward A. Fredericks said the orchestra needs the city’s ongoing help because of the difficulty of raising money from private companies during an economic recession.

The council will also consider approving a $5,000 grant to the sister-city committee to send a delegate to the community of Spitak in Armenia this fall. Thousand Oaks delegates will be sent to a convention in Cincinnati of U.S. cities that have established ties with cities in the Soviet Union.

Actors for Children, a local theater group, has asked for $1,500 to finance free performances for children.
