Supervisors Redirect Funds to Mental Health

Share

Los Angeles County supervisors on Tuesday canceled a $763,000 order for new office furniture for the Department of Mental Health, demanding that the money be spent instead on improving patient services.

The Department of Mental Health, which has closed down a number of clinics because of funding problems, recently spent $864,000 on office renovations and was planning to spend the additional money. In justifying the spending, acting Mental Health Director Francis J. Dowling said an unexpected surplus had been found and that 350 mid-level managers needed new, safer working stations.

But the county supervisors, at the urging of board member Gloria Molina, voted that the $763,000 would be better spent shoring up the department’s programs.
