UFW Protests Vons Health Code Violations: The United Farm Workers staged a demonstration charging repeated health code violations at the Montebello Tianguis market, part of a chain of Latino-oriented markets owned by Vons Cos. The union, which has been urging a boycott of Vons stores because the chain advertises grapes, said the Montebello store rolled up 114 violations during the 21 months ended in July and that a second store on Brooklyn Avenue had 106 violations during the same period. A Vons spokeswoman said the company has “not jeopardized the safety of our customers, nor would we.” An official with the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services said both stores have been cited in the past but that the number did not appear excessive given the large size of the stores.
