Pasadena : More Mental Tests Ordered
A Pasadena Superior Court judge has ordered a second psychiatric evaluation to determine whether Victoria Jacobs Madeira, 43, is mentally competent to stand trial on charges that she murdered her 78-year-old mother in La Canada Flintridge.
Based on an initial evaluation, Judge Paul Boland ruled last March that Jacobs was not able to assist in her own defense. She was transferred to a state mental hospital for tests and treatment.
On Friday Boland ordered a second evaluation by two court-appointed experts, with a report due to him on Sept. 20. Boland scheduled an Oct. 4 hearing to again rule on Madeira’s competency.
Investigators say Madeira, who was living in Anaheim, stabbed, then shot her mother, Roma Jaul Jacobs, at the older woman’s house on Oct. 14, 1990. Deputies found Madeira wearing military fatigues when she was arrested at the house.
During the attack, Madeira was accompanied by her 11-year-old son, who was wearing women’s clothing, authorities said. Earlier this year a Pasadena Juvenile Court judge heard testimony regarding the boy’s involvement in the slaying, then dismissed charges against him.
