Monrovia : Church Likely to Be Moved

The city’s oldest religious building, the Shiloh African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, is likely to be moved from the location where it has stood since 1887, Community Redevelopment Director Donald R. Hopper told the City Council on Tuesday.

The church, founded by a group of freed slaves one year after Monrovia’s incorporation, stands at the corner of Huntington Drive and Canyon Boulevard, where a developer has proposed building a medical office complex.

Hopper said he expects the developer’s plans to be completed within the next several weeks. Under a redevelopment plan, the church would be moved one block north to Canyon Boulevard and Maple Avenue, a site approved by the 50-member congregation.
