San Gabriel : Zone Change Gains Ground

Share

Over some neighbors’ objections, the City Council tentatively agreed Tuesday to allow businesses along a stretch of San Gabriel Boulevard now zoned residential.

The zone change, endorsed in a 3-2 vote, would affect the east side of the boulevard between Wells and Scott streets. Area residents have argued that stores there would worsen crime, trash, noise and traffic, especially along an adjacent alley that they now often use as an entrance to their homes.

City planning officials had favored the change as a way to spark business growth and bring the area into agreement with a general land-use plan that envisions commerce along the city’s main arteries. The zone change would make it easier for current or prospective owners to turn the homes into businesses.

Final action is expected at the council’s Sept. 17 meeting.
