FROM A TO ZIPPY by Bill Griffith (Penguin: $12.95). Irreverent, outre and frequently oblique in its humor, Bill Griffith’s “Zippy the Pinhead” ranks among the most original comic strips currently appearing in the papers. Griffith is not a great draftsman, but his sophisticated graphic sense enables him to spoof the vapid features of Hello Kitty and other dubious examples of contemporary design. He also coined the rallying cry of the morally anorexic ‘80s with the oft-quoted, “Are we having fun yet?” Zippy satirizes the bankruptcy of American consumer culture by ecstatically embracing it, and proclaims the emperor has no clothes by asking where he got that nifty polyester outfit.
