U.S. Beats Soviets in Canada Cup

Mike Modano and Pat LaFontaine scored for the United States in a 2-1 victory over the Soviet Union Saturday in the Canada Cup hockey tournament in Chicago.
It was the first U.S. victory in a major tournament over a Soviet team since the 1980 Winter Olympics and it clinched a spot in the semifinals for the United States.
In other action in the six-team tournament, Finland beat Sweden, 3-1, and Canada defeated Czechoslovakia, 6-2, behind two goals each by the Kings’ Wayne Gretzky and Al MacInnis.
