A Guide to the Best of Southern California : ANTIQUES : Just Us Chickens

Share

You wouldn’t think there could be so many variations on the lowly chicken, but, as About Antiques’ Jim Andersen says, “that’s before you see the collection.” There are more than 300 pieces of finely wrought fowl here, in milk glass, porcelain, cobalt, ceramic and wood, culled from all over the world. You’ll find chicks, hens, roosters, fighting cocks and more--many of them one of a kind--dating from the Revolutionary War to the early 20th Century, from such major makers as Staffordshire, Westmoreland and Imperial Glass.

Much of this delightful brood is functional, having once served as containers for baking powder, mustard, salt, soup and, of course, eggs, and each seems to tell a little story about the time and place in which it was made. The prices, as you might imagine, aren’t chicken feed. They range from $100 to, well, a figure with a couple more goose eggs after it.
