Dayworkers Need a Place

Over the past few weeks, a number of articles have appeared regarding the problem facing the day laborers in Moorpark and Agoura. It is clear to me that there are two very distinct sides to this issue. On one hand, these workers need income, and therefore, they need jobs. They need a place where they can assemble without harassment to enable them to seek temporary daywork. These people should be commended for their efforts.
On the other hand, owners of stores where the workers gather are concerned about their customers being frightened away and their businesses being hurt. I’m sure this is a very real fear for them.
The solution seems to be a rather simple one: an official site for the laborers to gather.
A vacant lot could serve the purpose as long as the workers and employers are all aware of the location.
We, as a society, owe it to these people to do whatever we can to help them. Perhaps it’s time for our city government to take a stand and get involved.
