THOUSAND OAKS : Schools Budget Is Balanced by Reserves

Share

The Conejo Valley school board approved a $67.8-million budget Thursday night that includes spending $2 million of the district’s reserves.

During the 1991-92 school year, the Conejo Valley Unified School District will take in $65.8 million.

However, the financial picture will be brighter than had been anticipated because 17,502 students showed up for classes--335 more than district officials had projected. The extra students will bring an additional $811,000 in state funding to hire 10 teachers and pay for supplies, Assistant Supt. Sarah J. Hart said.

Hart attributed the enrollment increase in part to the recession, which has prompted some parents to take their children out of private schools and also has resulted in some families moving in with older parents in Thousand Oaks, Hart said.

Anticipating a tough financial year, board members voted in May to cut 22 teaching positions and lay off 54 janitors, clerks and other non-teaching employees. Five teaching positions were later restored using extra funds.

Board members also voted Thursday to spend $170,000 to restore some counseling hours at the junior-high and high-school levels that were previously cut.
