King’s Lawyers Oppose New Hearing For Judge

Share

Defense lawyers in the Rodney G. King case have asked an appeals court to reject a request from the trial judge for a new hearing on his disqualification.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Bernard Kamins was removed from the case by the 2nd District Court of Appeal, which said that Kamins had made improper attempts to telephone the appellate court. Kamins denied the allegation and asked for a new hearing.

But defense lawyers for the four Los Angeles police officers accused of beating King asked instead that the case be allowed to go forward with a new trial judge, while the state attorney general or the Commission on Judicial Performance investigates the phone call dispute. “Let him attempt to clear his name there without further delaying the proceedings in this case,” the lawyers said in a brief filed with the appeals court.
