China-Laos Treaty Ends Longstanding Rift Over Border

BEIJING — Officials from China and Laos have initialed a border treaty, ending a dispute that has lasted more than a decade, an official report said Friday.
The treaty was concluded Thursday, three months after Chinese-Laotian mapping units finished a joint survey of the border area. Laos adjoins China’s Yunnan province in a heavily forested area with little development on either side.
China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency said Laos Vice Foreign Minister Soulivong Phrasithideth and Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Liu Huaqiu initialed the treaty and a map on Thursday. They agreed to submit the documents for formal signing as soon as possible.
