For dedicated gardeners, here are suggestions from the California Assn. of Nurserymen on what to do in the garden this week:

Plant winter blooming annuals now. Choose from pansies, violas, calendulas, iceland poppies, snapdragons and stock.

As the weather cools, you can lower the blade on your lawn mower.

Plant winter blooming cyclamen now. Available in white, pink, rose, lavender and red.

Add fall leaves to the compost pile to enrich your soil and make plants grow better.

Add several inches of mulch to your garden to keep roots cool.
