SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA JOB MARKET : Some Advice for Couples Kept Apart by Mileage

Share

- Communicate. Make sure in advance that both of you understand what you’re in for in terms of commuting time, expenses and potential frustrations. Make sure you agree that the arrangement is worth it.

- Put a limit on how long you’re willing to do this: two years, for example.

- Discuss how far you’re willing to travel, and how often. An hour by plane is one rule of thumb, but many couples commute coast to coast. Don’t forget the time it takes to get to and from airports.

- Make sure your joint income will allow for ample travel and phoning.

- Ask your employer for help with commuting expenses or with finding your partner a job in the new city, if he or she is willing to move. Most companies have no formal policy, but many are willing to help.
