SIMI VALLEY : Kiwanis Club Helps Disabled Students

Transportation for about 20 disabled Moorpark College students from Simi Valley no longer will be at the expense of other services, at least temporarily, thanks to a $3,000 grant from the Simi Valley Kiwanis Club, a college spokeswoman said.

According to Jan Andriese, coordinator of the disabled students program, the school provides two vans to transport about 40 disabled students in Thousand Oaks, Westlake, Moorpark, Newbury Park and Simi Valley to school.

Because of state budget cuts and the needs of other programs, the 20 Simi Valley students were in danger of losing the service, Andriese said.

Members of the Simi Valley Kiwanis Club heard about the transportation problem and donated the $3,000, which will be used to help defray the costs of operating the Simi Valley van.

The Simi Valley students also have access to city buses to get to the college. Even so, “transportation is a very difficult thing for students with disabilities in Ventura County . . . We’re very grateful to the Kiwanis for their gift,” Andriese said Friday.

School officials said the other Ventura County communities still provide the service, through which disabled students are picked up at their homes and taken to the college.
