World IN BRIEF : PHILIPPINES : Aquino Faces Revolt Over U.S. Presence
Opposition leaders called for the impeachment of President Corazon Aquino because of her campaign to defy the Philippine Senate’s decision to end nearly a century of U.S. military presence in the former colony. Aquino, who once supported efforts to oust the Americans from the Philippines but who changed her mind earlier this year, also faces a revolt by four ministers within her 22-member Cabinet. The chance of Aquino’s impeachment appeared slim, however, since the president controls all but about 50 lawmakers in the lower house of the legislature, where impeachment charges must be voted by a minimum of 69 of the 205 members.
