COUNTYWIDE : Jail Food Protest Fizzles After Day
All but 10 of the inmates in the maximum-security unit at the Ventura County Jail have given in to their growling stomachs.
On Thursday, 96 inmates had vowed to give up the food at the jail because they said it was infested with maggots, worms and other bugs.
But by Friday morning, most of the inmates decided the jail food was better than no food at all.
The controversy over the fare at the jail heated up about a week ago, when an inmate thought he had found a maggot in a meatball.
Jail officials and county health inspectors said they looked at the food but found no bugs.
Still, inmates were not satisfied.
After a small white substance was found in the cooked beans on Tuesday, members of the unit decided to go on a food strike.
On Friday, the holdouts said they will continue eating candy bars and potato chips until jail officials make efforts to improve the quality of the food.
