NATION IN BRIEF : MINNESOTA : Court Clears Couple in Child’s Death

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A Christian Scientist couple who relied on prayer in an attempt to heal diabetes complications that killed their son cannot be prosecuted for manslaughter, the Minnesota Supreme Court ruled. The 4-2 ruling said indictments charging Ian Lundman’s mother and stepfather with second-degree manslaughter in the 11-year-old boy’s death violated the constitutional guarantee of due legal process. The ruling said the state’s child-neglect law allows parents to seek alternate treatment for their children on religious grounds and that prosecuting the couple under another law was unfair.
