Sweet Georgia Onions Grow in Southland

Share

Q: I sent for some Vidalia onions from Georgia and they were terrific; very sweet and mild. Can I grow them here?

A: The Vidalia onion comes from the Vidalia region of Georgia and is renowned for its sweet, mild flavor. The onion is produced from seeds of an onion variety called Granex Hybrid. These onions will grow and produce well in most Southland areas. Plant the seeds in October or November; they need a long growing season. The onions will be ready for harvest in late spring. Seeds for Granex Hybrid onions should be available at local nurseries, and many mail-order seed companies carry the seeds.
