Fair Analysis

In the documentary that profiled Chief Justice Earl Warren (“Super Chief,” KCET, Aug. 30), I heard quite a lot about the question he would ask himself when seeking guidance: “Is it fair?”

Fairness is an abstract idea rather than an absolute factor, and it is simplistic and dangerous not to recognize this. Working out acceptable compromises in this imperfect world is an ongoing challenge for the best of us.
