S&P; Downgrades Four Life Insurance Firms: Standard & Poor’s Corp., the private ratings agency, downgraded the ability of four life insurance companies to pay claims but said the ratings changes did not mean the solvency of any of the companies was threatened. S&P; downgraded the claims-paying ability of New England Mutual Life Insurance Co., Principal Mutual Life Insurance Co., Minnesota Mutual Life Insurance Co., and Northwestern National Life Insurance Co. Analysts said the life insurers’ holdings of real estate investments, some of which have turned sour, were behind the downgradings.
