West Covina : Protection for Walnut Trees
California black walnut trees are expected to be included in the city’s tree preservation ordinance when the City Council adopts an amendment next month.
The council on Monday gave preliminary approval to the amendment, which protects the remaining black walnut woodlands in the San Jose Hills.
Last October, the city created a preservation ordinance prohibiting, without a permit, removal or cutting of historic trees, such as oaks and sycamores.
Earlier this year, the West Covina Historical Society and the California Native Plant Society asked city officials to include the walnut trees in its ordinance because they are becoming endangered.
