Norwalk : Study Says Moving Jet Fuel Tanks Would Be Too Costly
A federally funded study released this week found that it would be too expensive to relocate huge jet-fuel storage tanks at a Department of Defense fuel depot that is next to residential neighborhoods in Norwalk.
U.S. Rep. Esteban E. Torres (D-La Puente) and Norwalk officials, who requested the study, maintain that the 12 tanks, which hold up to 38 million gallons of jet fuel, should not be in a residential neighborhood because of the potential for explosion.
Defense Department officials maintain that the tank farm is safe.
The study, performed by Dames & Moore, a Phoenix consulting firm, estimates that it would cost the Department of Defense about $16 million to run the facility in Norwalk for the next 20 years, compared to $69 million if it were relocated on government property elsewhere and $91 million if the government were to pay a private firm to store the fuel.
Torres, in a press release, said he will request that the General Accounting Office review the study for thoroughness and accuracy.
