GM Fined $2.8 Million: The government issued a $2.8-million fine against General Motors Corp. for alleged safety violations at an Oklahoma plant where a worker was killed last April. Plant management “essentially ignored” the so-called lockout safety standard that requires all energy sources to be shut off before maintenance employees can work on equipment, the Labor Department said. The employee died from head injuries received when a lift on a motor rail conveyor belt suddenly turned on, the agency’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration said. General Motors, which has 15 days to contest the penalties, said it was reviewing the citation.
